BDS course in India : Draft Regulation
The Dental Council of India has submitted draft guidelines to the Central Government to revise the curriculum of BDS course in India to include a semester system, internships, and new subjects.
Like MBBS, BDS will become a 5.5 years course. Extending the duration of the course is a significant change in the curriculum. The current four years course and a one-year internship will be converted into a four and a-half-year course and a one-year mandatory internship similar to MBBS. The semester model will be implemented by the end of the annual system which will have a total of nine semesters, four subjects in each. To avoid the pressure on the students, there is an option to study two subjects after completing the first two. This will eliminate the pressure on studying 4 subjects at a time.
The courses will be divided into 2 ie Core subjects (Foundation Courses) and Electives. The foundation course will cover subjects like medical bioethics. Subjects like Sleep Dentistry, Forensic Odontology, Social Justice, Yoga, Environmental Science, etc. will be a part of the electives. Special credit points will be given for subjects like sports, and yoga which will help the students to be proficient in academic subjects as well as other subjects.
The Dental Council of India said that if the Center approves the proposals, the new curriculum will be implemented next year.
